Social Security Disability
You are entitled to benefits from Social Security Disability or SSDI if a disease or injury prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity. In 2008, "substantial gainful activity" means any job that pays at least $940 in gross income per month. However, many claims are denied because the person applying for benefits doesn't understand what information the Social Security Administration is looking for. More about Social Security Disability.
Supplemental Security Income
To be eligible for SSI, you must have limited income and resources and be aged, disabled or blind. You must be a U.S. citizen or national or in an eligible category of immigrants. Unlike Social Security Disability, there is no work history requirement or requirement that you have paid into Social Security. However, the process of applying for benefits can be long and frustrating. More about Supplemental Security Income.
SSDI/SSI Filing Process
Attorney Michael Sloan and our office staff can assist you at any stage of the Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income process, from filing a claim and reconsideration to a hearing before an administrative law judge and federal court review. More about SSD/SSDI filing process.
SSDI/SSI Disabling Diseases
Your medical condition is only half the story in determining whether you are entitled to Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income benefits. The other half is vocational, considering your age, your education and your work experience. For example, a condition that is considered a disability for someone who is 59 and has a high school education may not be considered a disability for someone who is 35 and has a college degree. More about SSDI/SSI disabling diseases.

Many people have been unfairly denied long-term disability benefits from private and employer-sponsored plans or had their benefits cut off. If you are not receiving the benefits you deserve, it's time to see a lawyer. More about long-term disability.
Family Law
By their very nature, family law issues such as a paternity action, divorce, modification, enforcement and adoption are both emotional and complex. It often takes a lawyer with experience and compassion to help you through the legal process. More about family law.
Divorce
Divorce is a time when many people seek to lash out at their former partner. However, doing so can add greatly to the cost and difficulty of your divorce. It can also create lasting emotional scars, especially when children are involved. Many attorneys take advantage of the emotions of divorce by charging large retainers and then prolonging the conflict until the retainer is gone. At the Law Offices of Michael Sloan, we will do everything we can to help you reach the most favorable outcome for you and your children by handling your case efficiently. More about divorce.
