McKinney, Texas, Supplemental Security Income Lawyer

Supplemental Security Income or SSI is a benefit program for people who are disabled, aged or blind and have little or no income or resources. At the Law Offices of Michael Sloan in McKinney, Texas, we offer a free initial consultation to explain how Supplemental Security Income works.

Who is eligible for SSI?

To be eligible for SSI, you must have limited income and resources and be aged, disabled or blind. You must be a U.S. citizen or national or in an eligible category of immigrants. Unlike Social Security Disability, there is no work history requirement and you do not have to have paid into Social Security.

How much does SSI pay?

Supplemental Security Income provides cash to meet basic clothing, food and shelter needs. Benefits can fluctuate monthly based on events in your life. For example, if you move in with somebody, his or her income will be counted as your income.

How do I apply for SSI?

You start by filing an SSI disability claim at you local social security office and signing medical releases or by phone at (972) 975-9180. Benefits do not begin until you file, so prompt filing is necessary. Also, SSI filing can be done online. You will start receiving SSI benefits once your claim is approved. However, the process can be long and frustrating. Most applicants are initially turned down by the government.

Why are SSI claims denied?

In the majority of cases, applicants are turned down because they don't understand what documentation the Social Security Administration wants. The SSI filing process is complex and the Social Security Administration offers little help to applicants. An attorney can help you with this process.
